You’re welcome to explore this information, or if you prefer, you can meet our practitioners right away.

Understanding the Types of Mental Health Practitioners

What is a Counsellor?

Counselling is one of the most accessible forms of therapy and has been around since the days of Ancient Greece. A counsellor helps you explore your thoughts, feelings and challenges in a safe, confidential space.

They will:

  • Support you in understanding your emotional landscape
  • Help you develop tools to make positive changes
  • Offer both short-term and long-term therapy tailored to your unique needs

Typical fees for individuals: £60–£90 per session
Couples counselling: £90–£100 per session

What is a Psychotherapist?

A psychotherapist offers in-depth emotional support, helping you understand patterns in your life and guiding you toward long-lasting change. Therapy is often longer-term, providing space for deep exploration and healing.

Psychotherapists:

  • Work similarly to counsellors but often with a broader scope
  • Help you develop insight and emotional resilience
  • Specialise in long-term therapeutic journeys

Typical fees: £60–£100 per session

What is a Clinical Psychologist?

Clinical psychologists are highly trained professionals with a doctorate-level qualification. They work with individuals experiencing complex emotional, behavioural or psychological issues that affect everyday life.

They will:

  • Conduct a thorough psychological assessment
  • Collaborate with you to create a personal ‘formulation’ of your difficulties
  • Use evidence-based therapies such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

Therapy is collaborative: you are the expert in your life, and the psychologist brings clinical expertise to support your journey.

Think of it like working together to solve a puzzle with kindness and structure.

Typical fees: £100 - £150 per session

What is a Psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. They are uniquely qualified to assess more complex cases and can prescribe medication when appropriate.

They typically:

  • Work with more severe or long-standing mental health challenges
  • Collaborate with therapists or GPs as part of a holistic care plan

Typical fees: £250–£380 per hour
Can prescribe medication

Types of Counselling We Offer

At The Practice, we understand that no two individuals are the same. That’s why we offer a variety of therapeutic approaches to match your needs and preferences.

Person-Centred Therapy

This compassionate and collaborative approach focuses on you and your experiences, your feelings and your inner strengths. It nurtures self-awareness and helps you build a stronger connection with yourself.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Explore how your past experiences, especially early relationships, may be influencing your present. Psychodynamic therapy brings unconscious patterns into conscious awareness and provides a powerful path toward clarity and healing.

Existential Therapy

Deep and philosophical, existential therapy supports you in exploring life’s big questions — identity, meaning, freedom and responsibility — and helps you find direction in the face of uncertainty or life transitions.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

A structured, evidence-based therapy that helps you identify unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. CBT is highly effective for anxiety, depression, and many other emotional and physical health issues.

Integrative Therapy

Our integrative therapists draw from multiple approaches, including person-centred, psychodynamic, and CBT, to create a bespoke therapeutic experience tailored just for you.

We Welcome EHC Referrals

We’re proud to meet the standards of the Education, Health, and Care (EHC) referral process. If you’re seeking therapeutic support as part of an EHC plan, we’re here to help.
