Dr Gautami Parekh (Tami) is a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist working with children, young people and their families. Alongside her private practice, she holds a senior role within the NHS, where she works with complex emotional and relational difficulties.
How Therapy Can Help
Young people often come to therapy when something no longer feels manageable. This may present as anxiety, low mood, withdrawal, changes in behaviour, or physical symptoms that do not have a clear explanation. Often, what feels most difficult is not only the experience itself, but finding a way to make sense of it or put it into words.
Tami offers a calm, reflective and non-judgemental space where this process can begin to unfold. Her work focuses on helping young people gradually develop a clearer understanding of their internal world, their relationships, and the patterns that may feel confusing or stuck.
Approaches to Therapy
Her approach is psychoanalytic and psychodynamic, grounded in an understanding of how early relationships, attachment experiences and wider life contexts shape emotional development. She works with sensitivity to identity, culture and belonging, including how experiences of difference, migration and intergenerational histories may be held within a young person’s world.
Areas of Experience
Tami has extensive experience working with complexity, including trauma and attachment difficulties, anxiety, emotional regulation, and identity-related challenges. Her work often sits alongside questions of identity, including gender, sexuality and belonging, as well as the impact of cultural, racial and intergenerational dynamics. She has worked across CAMHS, schools and specialist settings, including with refugees and asylum seekers and in women’s refuges, supporting individuals and families navigating significant adversity.
She also works with young people experiencing withdrawal, social isolation, school-based anxiety, and difficulties such as body image concerns, dysphoria, and eating and sleep-related issues. Where helpful, she adapts the therapeutic approach to support engagement for young people with neurodiverse profiles, including autism and ADHD.
Working with Families
Where appropriate, Tami works closely with parents, grandparents, carers and other significant adults involved in a young person’s life. Bringing the wider relational context into the work often allows for a deeper understanding of what is happening and can help shift patterns that may feel stuck or difficult to change.
She has a particular interest in early relational work, including parent–infant relationships, and in supporting families formed through adoption, fostering and surrogacy, including LGBTQ+ families.
