EMDR Therapy: A Powerful Approach to Healing from Trauma, Anxiety, and Depression
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective, evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals process and heal from distressing or traumatic experiences. EMDR is particularly beneficial for those struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD and emotional difficulties that stem from unresolved past events.
When we go through a traumatic or overwhelming experience, such as abuse, violence, accidents, bullying, loss or humiliation, our brains can sometimes become “stuck” and is unable to process the event in a healthy way. This can leave us feeling emotionally frozen, as if we’re reliving the past, with intrusive thoughts, intense emotions or physical sensations that disrupt daily life.
How Does EMDR Work?
Traumatic memories can become trapped in the nervous system, storing the original sights, sounds, emotions and body sensations without resolution. These unprocessed memories are often triggered in the present, creating patterns of distress that feel difficult to break.
EMDR uses a structured, 8-phase approach that incorporates bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds) to help the brain reprocess these “stuck” memories. This process enables your brain to form new connections, bringing in healthier, more adaptive thoughts and emotions.
As the memory is reprocessed, its emotional charge fades. You may still remember the event, but it no longer feels overwhelming or defining. EMDR is thought to mirror the natural healing processes that occur during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, where the brain integrates information and processes emotions.
“Old distressing material just keeps getting triggered over and over again... Once EMDR starts, a linking takes place. New information can come to mind and resolve the old problems.”

What Can EMDR Help With?
EMDR therapy is proven to be effective in treating a wide range of emotional and psychological challenges, including:
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety and Panic Attacks
- Depression
- Phobias and Fears
- Grief and Complicated Bereavement
- Low Self-Esteem and Confidence Issues
- Stress from Medical Trauma or Surgery
- Relationship Issues Linked to Past Trauma
Whether you’ve experienced a single traumatic incident or ongoing emotional pain, EMDR can help you break free from the past and feel more grounded, calm, and in control of your present.
Compassionate, Evidence-Based Support
Many clients find EMDR to be a transformative experience which can relieve years of emotional pain in a relatively short amount of time. It is endorsed by leading organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and NICE (UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) for the treatment of trauma-related conditions.
You do not need to “relive” the trauma in detail. EMDR is a gentle, structured approach that prioritises your emotional safety and individual pace.
